John Franco’s Memorable First Pitch at Citi Field
John Franco, who boasts 424 career saves, had a first pitch that people will remember—though perhaps not for the best reasons.
During Italian Heritage Night at Citi Field on Wednesday, the Mets’ all-time save leader experienced a moment reminiscent of rapper 50 Cent’s infamous first pitch in 2014. Wearing a colorful Italian flag jersey, Franco’s throw was unfortunately high and wide, ending up far from its intended target.
Laughter was his only reaction as he walked toward home plate, shrugging off the mishap while greeting Mets catcher Hayden Senger. It was a surprising moment from a man who achieved so much in Major League Baseball.
Interestingly, Ella, the daughter of a Mets Hall of Famer, commented on social media about this being Franco’s first pitch since his shoulder surgery. She humorously asked fans to “cut him some slack.” Maybe that’s fair—everyone has off days, right?
Despite her father’s awkward throw, Ella seemed to enjoy poking fun at him, sharing her laughter online. “Hey, I’m crying,” she wrote. She also made a comparison suggesting it was as funny as that 50 Cent pitch.
Franco, a St. John’s graduate, played 21 seasons in the MLB, spending 14 of those with the Mets. He was drafted by the Dodgers in 1981, later making a name for himself with the Reds, earning four All-Star selections along the way.
His last season was in 2005, finishing with a record of 90 wins and 87 losses, alongside a 2.87 ERA at the age of 44 while pitching for the Astros.
The Mets, struggling with injuries, were looking to turn their season around. As they faced the Tigers, they found themselves in last place in the National League East with just 16 wins to 25 losses. At least they managed to win the opener, which featured a surprise debut from prospect AJ Ewing.
