Mets hoping J.D. Martinez can jumpstart offense soon

After four miserable games, the Mets will have to get through at least four more before important offensive reinforcements arrive.

J.D. Martinez will be eligible to join the team as early as Sunday after being off the roster for 10 days in what is technically a minor league stint being used as emergency spring training.

Martinez did not sign with the Mets until March 23, when the need for a bat seemed less urgent.

The Mets are winless through four games and enter Wednesday’s MLB action with the worst offense in the majors (two runs allowed per game), posting a combined batting average of .188 and an OPS of .551.

They will be hoping that Martinez can help solve the short sample size problem.

Martinez has been staying at the Mets’ facility, batting with minor league and rehabbing pitchers.

The Mets started DJ Stewart (twice), Starling Marte and Francisco Alvarez at DH.

Martinez appeared in 113 games with the Dodgers last season, posting an .893 OPS, 33 home runs, and 103 RBIs.

Although he remains a free agent, turning down offers from the Giants and other teams wary of the 36-year-old with no position, Martinez’s bat shows no signs of slowing down.

“He has great experience and is someone I have a lot of respect for,” Harrison Bader said recently. “I’ve only seen him from afar, but I’ve heard the best things about him. … I don’t know how he was still on the board, but he was happy.”

Manager Carlos Mendoza could leave it up to Martinez whether the Mets want him to join the team immediately, get more at-bats at the facility, or head to an affiliate for a more traditional minor league affiliation. It was suggested that it was highly sexual.

“This is not a typical spring training, where you have two or three days of intense activity followed by a day or so off,” Mendoza said Tuesday ahead of the first of two games postponed due to rain. It’s not something that can be done.” “Right now, he’s been out since we met him. … He knows his body better than anyone.”

And the winless Mets know better than anyone how much they need their bats next to Pete Alonso in the standings.

“JD will improve any lineup,” Brandon Nimmo said. “We are excited to have him.”

Only tickets for Tuesday’s rainout will be honored for Thursday’s single-entry doubleheader against the Tigers at Citi Field.

The first game will begin at 12:10 p.m., and the second game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the first game ends.
