Mets join Yankees in Dylan Cease trade sweepstakes

The Mets are one of the teams still keeping tabs on signing White Sox starter Dylan Cease, who is one of the players most likely to be traded yet this offseason.

Schiess is among a group of starting pitchers the Mets are considering to fill out their rotation.

They also continue to monitor left-handed free agents Sean Manaea and Hyun-Jin Ryu, among others.

And they keep in touch with their left-hand man Shota Imanaga.

The Japanese free agent is said to be seeking a $100 million contract. However, the price has been pushed further as teams continue to have concerns about the effects of his 2020 shoulder surgery and whether his style of training in the zone makes him particularly susceptible to home runs in MLB. There is a growing expectation that prices could fall into the lower range.

Imanaga must make a decision within the next few days. This is because by the end of the contract period, you need to have a completed document and a signed document, not just an agreement.

For Imanaga, that's Thursday at 5pm ET. Therefore, there is an urgent need to reach an agreement at least one or two days in advance.

As for the seeds, the Mets are not seen as a favorite to win. If there's a team that has a promising future, it's the Orioles.

The Dodgers and Yankees are also being considered as suitors for the right-hander, who turned 28 late last month.

Executives who investigated the cancellation said the White Sox' asking price was expected to be a three-fold premium.

But the beauty lies in how teams evaluate prospects. So, in the end, she chooses one sure-fire prospect and then chooses her group of other two or three prospects that the White Sox rate highest among the suitors. It will be decided.

The Mets are focusing on a long-term game that extends to 2024, and they have no interest in Milwaukee ace Corbin Burnes, who is entering his professional baseball year. (And there are strong questions about how seriously the Brewers will consider trading Barnes, at least by the trade deadline.)

The cancellation would be the kind of production that would help meet the Mets' two goals. To achieve the twin goals of remaining competitive in 2024 and starting more efforts in 2025 when we have a clearer picture of what David Stearns has in the organization and much of the dead money. It would be helpful. There will be books on players like Max Scherzer, James McCann, and maybe Justin Verlander.

The current rotation for the Mets is Kodai Chiga, Jose Quintana, Luis Severino, and Adrian Houser, with a likely battle between Joey Lucchesi and Tyler Megill.

They would like to bring in another more established starter as a way to turn Lucchesi and Megill into depth players.

Quintana, Severino, and Hauser are all set to become free agents after the 2024 season, and the addition of Schiess would give the Mets another solid piece for next offseason, along with Chiga.

That's one of the reasons the Mets have been linked to Brandon Woodruff, whom Stearns knows well from their time together in Milwaukee.

Woodruff underwent surgery on the anterior capsule of his pitching shoulder after the season and may not be able to pitch in 2024. However, the team could sign Woodruff to a two-year deal with the idea, for example, of rehabbing him for most or all of the 2024 season and playing the full season through the start of 2025.

In the Mets' dream scenario, one or two of Megill, David Peterson (when he returns from hip surgery), Dominic Hamel, Christian Scott, Tyler Stewart, Blade Tidwell, and Mike Bashir. , and will establish himself as a solid rotation player in 2024. Option to move forward.
