Juan Soto just can’t catch a break.
The $765 million player has had a rocky start with the Mets following his record-setting 15-year contract in Queens.
In a recent game against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, Soto, who has only hit five home runs this season, was thwarted during a pivotal moment. He connected with a fastball from Andre Palante, sending it to center field, but Victor Scott II made a tremendous leaping catch, robbing Soto of a likely three-run homer that would have broken a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning.
Upon reaching first base, Soto seemed to show some disbelief, perhaps underscoring the pressure he feels in this new chapter of his career.
According to MLB stats, the ball traveled at 105.9 mph but that power didn’t translate to runs as the Mets struggled to avoid being swept in the doubleheader.
Despite some promising plays, like Mark Vientos’ attempt and Brandon Nimmo’s drive which was caught by a diving Jordan Walker, the Mets couldn’t capitalize, even after Pete Alonso loaded the bases with a walk.
Soto hit another fly ball to left field in his next at-bat.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Mets lost 6-5, with Blade Tidwell making his major league debut. Soto finished the day batting .258 with 14 RBIs and an .829 OPS across the two games.
Heading into the second game, the Mets stood at 22-12, holding the top spot in the National League East.
