The Mets took advantage of the Phillies' bullpen, scoring five points on five hits and two sac flies. Jeff Hoffman gave up three earned runs without recording an out, and his postseason ERA was at an infinity. Matt Stram gave up the remaining two earned runs allowed on target.
Brandon Nimmo had RBIs in the eighth and ninth innings, and Mark Vientos, wild card hero Pete Alonso, pinch hitters JD Martinez and Starling Marte each gave up one run.

This was a tough loss for the Phillies, who had a pitcher advantage in Game 2. Christopher Sanchez (3.91 ERA) will face Luis Severino, who posted a 3.91 ERA in the regular season but has a career 5.07 ERA in the postseason. .
