Mets’ Max Kranick has gone from DFA’d player to bullpen piece

Port St. Lucy – Max Cranick was not satisfied with the direction his career headed when he was designated for allocation by the Mets and was not billed earlier last season.

Back in Triple A Syracuse, he decided to follow his own path.

“I appeared in Syracuse, who was upset with the world,” said Cranick before the Mets beat the Marlins 7-3. “I was a way of thinking that I was going to understand things myself, but that didn't work.”

In his second consecutive season of spring training with the Mets, the 27-year-old emerged as a potential bullpen job.

His fastball was crisp this spring, jumping into the 97-98 mph range, with results continuing.

On Friday, he worked in a scoreless frame of 1²/₃ against the Nationals, demonstrating his ability to enter the team's brass in the innings. In seven innings in four appearances this spring, he recorded eight strikeouts without giving up the run he acquired.

After struggling when he returned to Syracuse last year, Cranick (who drew the hamstrings in spring training to begin the season in Illinois) eventually agreed to allow the organization's assistant pitching coordinator, Grayson Crawford, to design his plans.

Cranick began to thrive after his initial complaints that he had been moved from starter to reliever.

“[Crawford] “I'm going to give you some drills, we're going to look up in 4-6 weeks, and if things aren't going in the right direction, of course we can change it and pivot, but let's trust our plans,” Kranick said. “And it looked like I got another MPH every month. I was 98 years old. [mph] At the end of the year. ”

For his work, Cranick was rewarded with a wildcard roster spot against the brewers to give the team a fresh arm after others were exhausted in the final regular season game.

Kranick didn't pitch in the series, but it felt like he noticed it.

The Mets have at least one bullpen vacant to start this season, and the Cranic is part of a discussion from groups that also include names such as Huascar Brazobán, Tyler Zuber and Danny Young.

“Max started this process mid-last year,” pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said. “When he left the roster, it opened his eyes a bit and he got the chance to go back to who he is, his roots and get Grayson Crawford back to his speed last year.”

Multiple possibilities for the Cranic – Jose Batoto succeeded in such a role – is also intrigued by Hefner.

“He has some starters in his history and we don't want to lose it because I think there's some worth there,” Hefner said. “He can be left-handed and rights so having the ability to do that is very valuable to him and us.”

Crannick, originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania, began his career with the Pirates before Tommy John's surgery was on the sidelines for 1½ seasons.

“I think I was just injured at the wrong time,” Kranick said of his pirate tenure. “The chance was there in 2022, then I blew my elbows and missed the second half and with the horse they were approaching, I was pushed out. I wasn't really hitting that window.”
