Mets offer fans a genuine trip down memory lane with Alumni Classic

The Mets haven’t exactly been a source of excitement lately as they approach the end of the regular season. Still, fans found joy and a sense of nostalgia during Saturday’s pre-game ceremony and the alumni classic game in Flushing.

Team owners Steve and Alex Cohen have emphasized their dedication to honoring the past this season, hosting several jersey retirements and other tributes.

One former player expressed a mixed sense of nostalgia and anticipation: “I won’t miss the suits. I’m around familiar faces again, connecting with fans. Once I hang up my cleats, I don’t plan on putting on a suit ever again. But for now, it’s a great way to give back to the fans and walk down memory lane.”

Hall of Famer Mike Piazza received a warm reception, as did popular former players like Agbayani, Johan Santana, and Matt Harvey. Other fan favorites, including Daryl Strawberry, Pedro Martinez, Jose Reyes, RA Dickey, Carlos Delgado, and Bartolo Colon, also made appearances.

“I still feel like a kid running around the field,” Reyes shared. “Seeing teammates from 20 years ago is just incredible.”

Bobby Valentine and Terry Collins, both former managers, also participated in the festivities. Valentine even donned a fake mustache and glasses for a bit of comic relief, reminiscent of his antics from 1999.

Former Mets pitcher Jacob DeGrom, now with the Rangers, visited the dugout and caught up with teammates from the Mets’ 2015 World Series team, including Collins.

Willie Randolph and Jerry Manuel joined Valentine and Collins to throw out ceremonial first pitches, adding to the atmosphere of nostalgia.

Some amusing moments unfolded when Turk Wendell, a former standout, hit a plastic bag before pitching; unfortunately, he exited the game early due to injury.

Interestingly, the standout defensive play of the day came from shortstop Rayordnes, a three-time Gold Glove winner.

“It’s fantastic that the Mets are eager to reconnect like this,” stated Curtis Glanson. “Fans appreciate it, and we’re grateful to the ownership for making this happen. It’s exhilarating for everyone involved.”
