Steve Cohen Promises to Address Fans Soon

Steve Cohen, the owner of the Mets, recently indicated that he will “speak soon.” This statement came in a series of posts on social media early Sunday, as fans voiced their frustrations during a tough season. This followed the firing of head coach Carlos Mendoza last Friday, along with the Mets losing two out of three games to the Phillies over the weekend.

One fan reached out to Cohen, asking, “What are your future plans? Are you going to talk? I think a lot of us would love to hear from you. This season has been incredibly disappointing.” However, Cohen didn’t specify when the fans could expect to hear from him, nor did he share his views on the team’s current performance.

Cohen also took to social media to counteract some circulating theories online, particularly about an incident where fans were removed from Citi Field for displaying a “Fire Stearns” sign while referring to Mets director of baseball operations, David Stearns. He noted, “It’s fine for fans to express their feelings and hold up signs, but the situation escalated when the individual involved became disruptive, which affected those around him.” Unfortunately, he didn’t seem willing to consider another perspective when a fan questioned his explanation, leading Cohen to discuss the narrative surrounding the incident.

This wave of frustration among fans comes right after the Mets suffered a 5-4 defeat to the Phillies on Saturday, marking their fourth consecutive series loss. With a record of 35 wins and 49 losses, they now sit 15 games behind in the National League East and are also 9.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot.

Cohen has been the owner since 2020, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing. The team has only made it to the playoffs twice during his tenure, with the Mets winning the National League Championship in 2024 but eventually losing to the Dodgers. They also faced disappointment in 2022, getting eliminated by the Padres in the Wild Card Series. Last season’s collapse was particularly unexpected; after a strong start of 45-24, the team faltered to finish at 38-55, missing out on the playoffs in a dramatic end to the season.
