Reaction to Pete Alonso’s Performance
New York Mets baseman Pete Alonso faced criticism from fans on Monday after what appeared to be a premature celebration following a defensive play against the Boston Red Sox.
At the bottom of the sixth inning, with Boston leading 3-1, Mets pitcher Kodai Senga managed to get David Hamilton out by catching a grounder. Alonso, who fielded the ball, then threw it to Senga to complete the play, seemingly celebrating afterward.
However, two innings earlier, Alonso had attempted to throw a ball to Senga but missed his target entirely, throwing it over his head instead. This misstep did not go unnoticed. Just the night before, he also struggled in a game against the New York Yankees, where his throw to home plate completely missed the mark. Consequently, the Mets not only lost that game but also fell short against the Red Sox.
After the Yankees game, Alonso expressed regret, stating, “I ruined it. I just made a terrible throw. That whole inning, this game is on me. This is 100% on me.”
Despite the frustrations, Alonso managed to have a strong outing against Boston, finishing 3-3 during the game. His season stats reflect a .301 batting average, an OPS of .964, and nine home runs. Still, the Mets are starting to show some wear despite their earlier success, now tied for first in the National League East with a 29-19 record.
The recent losses marked a downturn for the Mets, who had a strong performance in April with only eight defeats. But in May, they have already lost nine out of the first few games, dropping four of their last five, including a loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates last week.
