Carson Benge’s Future with the Mets
LAS VEGAS — Carson Benge was promoted to Triple-A late last season, but the Mets have high hopes for the young outfielder. They believe he could step into a starting role in the major leagues by 2026.
During the recent general managers meeting, team president David Stearns was asked about potential center fielders for the upcoming season. He mentioned veterans Tyron Taylor and Benge as options.
“Carson Benge will enter spring training with a shot to join our roster,” Stearns commented, noting that the offseason will be important for decisions moving forward.
Benge, at just 22, was the Mets’ first-round selection in the 2024 draft. He spent the bulk of last season at Double-A Binghamton and was later called up to Syracuse, where he appeared in 24 games with a batting line of .178/.272/.311, including three home runs.
Another promising prospect, Jett Williams, has experience in center field as well. However, Stearns hinted that Williams might be trailing behind Benge in the race for a major league position this season.
“I wouldn’t want to close any doors,” Stearns added. “You can see the state of our roster.”
When asked how Benge’s role would influence the team’s offseason strategy regarding center field, Stearns shared, “This is part of a broader discussion. When you have strong young players in the upper minor leagues, we need to find a way to integrate them. Carson is definitely one of those players.”
Stearns also mentioned that despite his struggles last season, Kodai Chiga will not be transitioned into a bullpen role.
“He’s shown he can perform well at the major league level,” Stearns said regarding Benge. “The talent is undeniable. We believe in his ability to have a strong comeback year, and we’ll ensure he gets that chance.”
Looking ahead to the offseason, Stearns clarified that he does not plan to let payroll constraints dictate their decisions.
Last season, the Mets had a total salary of $340 million.
“Steve is fully committed to backing the team however he can,” Stearns stated, referring to team owner Steve Cohen. “When opportunities arise, we talk regularly about what is best for the team.”
