“I thought he was, you know, better than before,” Manager Carlos Mendoza commented after the Mets’ 10-8 win at Comerica Park. “They put together some strong swings.”
Healthley gave up a lead-off double to Riley Green, then allowed an RBI single by Zack McKinsley with two outs. Brooks Laurie came in to finish the inning.
“The fact that [Helsley] was throwing strikes and facing challenges is a positive,” Mendoza noted.
Healthley has allowed at least one run in seven out of his last ten outings and is trying to address what he perceives to be a pitch change issue.
“I think it really just comes down to execution,” Mendoza said. “Today, they were aggressive and got to him.”
After the game, Mendoza indicated that Kodai Senga would stay in the rotation for now, hinting he hadn’t made a decision about another struggling right-hander.
“They’re part of the rotation,” he responded when asked about Sean Manaea and Senga.
The Mets have a day off on Thursday, marking the start of a stretch of 16 games that offer rolling options for weekends in Cincinnati. Currently, Mendoza has Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, and David Peterson lined up for the next three games.
Tylor Megill could be ready for a rehab stint from Triple-A Syracuse by Tuesday, potentially slotting him into either a starter or reliever role. The Mets are also considering Brandon Sprout for additional options.
According to Mendoza, Tyrone Taylor has been dealing with some tightness in his left hamstring but has shown signs of improvement since Monday. The outfielder last played on Friday.
Cedric Mullins started his third consecutive game in center field.
Francisco Alvarez is set to join Syracuse for consecutive games starting Tuesday as he continues his minor league rehab. Alvarez is recovering from a ligament sprain in his right thumb and a fracture in his left little finger.
Luisangel Acuña and Justin Hagenman were called up from Syracuse as the roster expands to 28 players this month. Acuña is a potential option for center field as needed and will serve as a pinch runner or defensive substitute, while Hagenman adds depth to the bullpen.
