Mets reliever Reed Garrett vultures fifth victory of season

After the Mets brought on Edwin Diaz in the ninth inning Sunday and failed to score in the bottom of the inning, there was little question as to who would be next.

Introducing Reed Garrett, who is rapidly emerging as the “vulture” of the 21st century with his talent for winning.

The right-hander helped the Mets survive by winning 4-2 in 11 overtime innings against the Cardinals at Citi Field.

Garrett pitched 10 scoreless innings and allowed an automatic runner (an unearned run) to score on a single by Brendan Donovan in the 11th inning, but the Mets added three runs in the bottom of the inning with a home run by Mark Vientos. I won.

Garrett (5-0) is tied for the major league lead in wins.

“I wish I could take credit for all these wins, but this shows how good we are at fighting back,” Garrett said.

Garrett pointed out that it was odd to start consecutive innings with an automatic runner already on second base.

“From the beginning, it feels like it’s do or die,” he said. “Even if it’s an unearned goal, you’re doing everything you can to stop him.”


Francisco Lindor, who tied the score at 1-1 with a blowout in the sixth inning, is batting .314/.375/.608 with four home runs in his past 13 games.

Although he got off to a slow start as a left-handed hitter, he has gone 12-for-37 (.324) with six extra-base hits in his past 10 games as a left-handed hitter. He started the season left-handed, hitting 4-for-50 (.080).

Single-A St. Lucie’s David Peterson pitched two perfect innings with five strikeouts in his first rehab start since undergoing labral repair surgery in November.

The left-handed pitcher will be eligible to return from the disabled list on May 27th.


Tyler Megill is expected to pitch in his second rehab start Thursday at Double-A Binghamton.

The right-handed pitcher pitched two scoreless innings Saturday at Single-A Brooklyn in his first appearance since being placed on the IL with right shoulder tightness.


Kodai Senga is scheduled to take batting practice on Monday as the next step after recovering from tightness in his right shoulder. He’ll probably throw 20-25 pitches.


Left-hander Danny Young was selected from Triple-A Syracuse, and Josh Walker was optioned.
