Phoenix – The Mets had a significant impact on Monday night, which they needed to overcome the Diamondbacks.
Francisco Lindor stepped up. The Mets’ shortstop found his rhythm and truly made an impact. With his three-run homer, the team found some relief in a 5-4 win at Chase Field, snapping their two-game losing streak.
They had been leading 2-1 with Pete Alonso’s homer when they entered the seventh inning. Following a single from Francisco Alvarez and a double from Tyrone Taylor, Lindor delivered against Ryan Thompson, marking his seventh homer of the season.
Dedniel Nuñez struggled in the eighth, walking all three batters he faced in his season debut. Reed Garrett stepped in, navigating a bases-loaded situation but yielding a single to Josh Naylor, allowing one run to score.
Eugenio Suárez hit a high fly ball that found the center field fence, bringing in two more runs. However, Naylor hesitated reaching second base, which turned Suárez’s hit into a long two-run single. But Garrett remained composed, holding onto the 5-4 lead by retiring the next two batters.
Edwin Diaz closed out the ninth for his eighth save, despite a slow error from Alonso that occurred while covering first base for Alec Thomas’ grounder. However, Alvarez tagged Thomas out as he attempted to steal second, ending the game.
Griffin Canning had another five-inning outing, managing to keep the run count low. This time, he pitched well up until the sixth inning before walking Pavin Smith, and finally finished with one run on six hits, lowering his ERA to 2.50.
Corbin Carroll led off with a homer that marked Canning’s first allowed in recent starts. Remarkably, it was the first run he’d given up since April 11.
In a close play, Taylor was thrown out at home plate by Carroll after trying to score from third when Lindor hit a fly ball to right. Meanwhile, Alonso showcased his power again, hitting a massive 425-foot homer that put the Mets ahead 2-1. His momentum continues as he aims for another stellar month, following his impressive performance in St. Louis.
The pitching continued to struggle for the Diamondbacks, with Ryne Nelson pulled after giving up a hit to Lindor in the fifth. Nelson finished with 4¹/₃ innings, allowing two runs on three hits along with four walks. He stepped in for the injured Corbin Burnes.
Canning faced some challenges but managed to hold the line, showcasing resilience on the mound.
