Brett Batty made the most difficult decision he could.
However, it appears he wasn’t doing enough to make the final result different.
The Mets are making the most logical move by bringing the infielder back to Triple-A Syracuse. The post was confirmed Thursday, and Jeff McNeill is scheduled to join the Washington roster starting Friday.
Removing Batty from the roster means Louis Sanger Acknya, who could be an option in the central field and had a great defense in the middle when he began to hit.
So, 28-year-old Jose Azocah, who can patrol each outfield spot, has been 3-3 so far and has not been able to choose without being exposed to the exemption.
He was there despite his strong finishing kick on his latest major league runs as Batty was able to choose the option.
Baty, a former Toolsy round pick, was not a hit at the major league level in 2023 or 2024, but was not a hit this season.
However, in his last eight games, he hit .304, earned .993 OPS, excavating two doubles, triples and loud home runs. His last major league match has been remembered for a while, for a while, for destroying a two-run shot from Phillies ace Zach Wheeler on Wednesday.
Baty is also a left-handed batsman and doesn’t play a clear role in the team with McNeill, who plays most days when he returns from an oblique strain, so that wasn’t enough.
The Mets wanted to keep Azoker (helpful in light of Joseciri’s injuries) with experience in center field, but Ackna can find a niche with McNeill and team.
The right batsman can act as a complement to McNeill or return to the outfield. Anyway, he is a valuable late-leaning base runner and leads the Mets with six steels.
This means the Mets are sending out a 25-year-old who may have finally figured out how to pitch in the major leagues.
On Wednesday, Batty felt encouraged by his recent batting — “I’ve just swung around with more certainty,” he said — and admitted that uncertainty on the roster was “difficult.”
“It’s part of the business. It’s something we signed up,” Baty said. “We really can’t do anything about it. We just have to get out there and make sure we win the game.”
If Batty has comfort, he shows this stint more than any previous stint, his bat looks promising, and his gloves have the abilities in both the second and third.
After he hits the 19th inning and walks just three times with a 58-plate appearance, there is a clear area he will tackle at a lower level, but the question is whether Beatty can continue to advance while facing less competition.
“You learn how to hit the big leagues by hitting the big leagues,” co-hitting coach Jeremy Burns said earlier this month.
Baty has a track record of crushing pitching away from the major leagues and owns a lifelong .899 OPS with 26 home runs in 94 games against Syracuse.
He was also a spring training star and helped him win spots on the opening day roster.
He wasn’t running at work, but he had begun taking steps to make a point before the Mets encountered a roster crunch.
“He plays a lot, and so does Ackna,” coach Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday. “…it’s tough [decision] here. “
The catching decision was easy. When Francisco Alvarez is activated, defensively impressed Hayden Senger was chosen to be unauthorized (going 28-5). Alvarez destroyed the bones of Hamate on his left hand in early March, opening the door to Senger’s debut and opening the heavier workload of Louis Torrens.
