They say you can't win the World Series in December, January or February. Anyway, that's what they say.
I say: If the Dodgers don't win it all this year, and they're historically heavy favorites – then the spending heavy, the intense Mets could be just.
If the Mets were to become champions, they won Steve Cohen's Ultra Modern Beverly Hills residence, his West Bocali Treat, and Pete Alonso's private hideaway club in Tampa. They won the private pow wow winter, booked by two big signatures, giving the Mets arguably the best lineup of baseball and more than a random chance in October.
The early winter story marked the biggest sports contract ever, as Juan Soto culminated in his decision to travel nine miles south and east. Not for the Mets! ), and a slight change in position between the two teams.
The Yankees, the darling of history, could be number one with the game's highest salary, 27 titles and a ubiquitous interlock NY cap worn all over the world. But Soto has made the Mets more relevant for decades with one quick move of Penn moment before they raised their happiest press conference ever.
Soto declared when he signed a record $765 million deal that he decided to sign in to Queens because he saw a better future for the Mets. We are not trying to declare the great apple best brothers to the Yankees' eternal brothers. There's not yet at all. But they now look even better than when Soto made that amazing declaration.
That's because two days later, two months later, the Mets confirmed that Soto was not the best alternative player ever, bringing back Alonso, their beloved slugging base move. Unlike Soto, who has a contract that can take him to middle-aged people, Alonso's opt-out means he might return in just 2025. But it's okay, it's the season we're previewing today.
And this season looks like a winner for the Mets. The Mets may have passed the talented but nickellist bravery and a very solid Phillies in the close Eastern NL.
Certainly, this team is not perfect. That's not the case with this side of the Dodgers.
But when the Mets unleashed a second miracle in their 63-year history and launched their two Mookie-made comebacks, just like the Mets team heading into spring from Dock and Daryl's wild days. I can see it.
It's not stretch to think they can win their third ring after they reach the National League Championship Series as one expected last year as well. Their biggest hurdle remains in LA, allowing them to win the World Series in the shell of the pitching staff, adding four incredible weapons. With a return to Mound of Impossible Superstar Shohei ohtani, the Dodgers look like their most terrifying favourite since the Mets entered the National League.
Two teams with the best salary in baseball may be the best teams in baseball. Unfortunately, unlike LA, the Mets are not completely perfect.
David Stearns is the GM that GM Cohen has been hoping for since Cohen laid out $2.4 billion for Ballclub. He showed in 2024 that he was able to find a rare spinning dig and was buying back starters at flea markets.
Two things we learned about Stern is that he likes long deals for pitchers almost as much as older players. So the Mets ignored the trio of Max Fried, Corbin Burns and Blakesnell, returning with Shawn Mania's rotation and the Flyers quartet.
If you have concerns, this is it. Manaea re-played his windup and reinvigorated his career, but the rest of the rotation is talented enough, but with a considerable amount of question mark.
Kodai Senga pitched like an ace in 2023, but he virtually disappeared last year, along with Ghost Folk. Frankie Montas is an unearned fire engine that he was not himself as a yankee.
Clay Holmes is the lovely arm that the Mets imagine as a starter. And David Peterson flashed his first round potential in 2024. Overall, the spin is solid, but far from a dodger-like thing.
Of course, the lineup featuring MVP runner-up Francisco Linder, bass machine Brandon Nemo, emerging star Mark Vientos and of course Soto and Alonso doesn't require any ace spins.
The truth is told the day after bringing Alonso back and bringing a smile to the fans. Soto also allowed himself to look back on himself in a phone interview with the Post. The days of wanting to play meaningful games in September are officially over.
“We have a team that looks pretty good,” Cohen decided.
We agree.
