Mets silenced by Brewers in one-hit Opening Day flop

If a Mets player threw a punch during Friday’s eight-inning shouting match against the Brewers and landed, it would match the team’s hit total that day.

Simply put, the Mets were outplayed by Freddy Peralta and the Brewers’ bullpen and were silenced with a 3-1 loss in the opening game in front of a sold-out Citi Field crowd of 42,137.

Starling Marte’s second-inning home run provided hope for the afternoon.

This was the Mets’ only hit.

In the 8th inning, Reece Hoskins was spiked by Jeff McNeil on a late slide, emptying the benches.

Both teams barked at each other, and Hoskins turned tearful eyes to McNeil. But order was restored without any punches being thrown.

Hoskins’ rocky relationship with the Mets dates back to 2019. Hoskins, who was with the Phillies at the time, took 33 seconds to circle the bases on a home run trot after Jacob Rehm threw behind him first.
