Mets’ Starling Marte plays hero with walk-off single in extras vs. Nationals

Just when the Mets needed another hero, Starling Marte came to bat in the top of the 10th inning.Number He pitched an inning on Monday night and became that guy.

Francisco Lindor's back is still sore, but not as bad as the Mets' lineup. Marte hit a walk-off RBI single to lead his team to a 2-1 victory over the Nationals at Citi Field.

The Mets, who snapped a two-game losing streak, have allowed just three runs in their past 24 innings since Saturday.

The drought continues for Lindor, who has missed all but one at-bat in that span (he singled as leadoff hitter in Sunday's game at Philadelphia but was removed in the second inning due to back soreness).

But the Mets got the most out of their six hits on the night, and the party got going when Marte automatically sent a runner home off Jacob Barnes in his second at-bat of the night.

A RBI single by Jose Iglesias in the eighth inning tied the game at 1-1 and gave the crowd of 21,694 hope that a comeback victory was on the way.

A double by Tyrone Taylor started the comeback, and after Francisco Alvarez's infield single resulted in an out, pinch-hitter Marte grounded out to reliever Derek Law on the first pitch of the game.
