Mets stars’ coveted sixth skill can give them a season-long advantage

West Palm Beach – part of the debate over whether Lusagelacña should make an opening day roster — at least outside the Mets wall — is that he is offering a backup shortstop.

This should be as relevant as whether he was a good singer or not.

Francisco Lindor may not be Cal Ripken Jr., but he is on the Venn diagram. If he gets injured in the game, the Mets could survive the rest with, say, Brett Batty, and call someone the next day. So, if Acuña becomes part of the first day's roster, it's not due to his short stop skills.

This highlights the signature of Juan Soto and Pete Alonso's re-signment with Lindor in place. Over the past three seasons, the Mets have players who have played third (Alonso, 476), fifth (Lindor, 473), and sixth (Soto, 472). The fourth most expensive of this year is Brandon Nimo, with its 454 game being 22nd between 2022 and 24.
