Mets’ strategy for promising pitching prospects as standout Nolan McLean excels

For a variety of reasons, it looks like the Mets aren’t planning to showcase any of their valuable starting pitchers anytime soon.

The most evident reason is the lack of necessity for a flexible rotation, especially with Paul Blackburn potentially rehabbing as an option.

However, there are subtler issues at play. Brandon Sprote continues to struggle at Triple-A Syracuse, while Jonanton’s success has been hampered at Double-A Binghamton. Nolan McLean appears to be the closest to being deemed ready for a promotion.

McLean has quickly moved up a level, excelling with a 1.37 ERA over five starts at Binghamton before being promoted to Syracuse.

Stearns noted that McLean has done “a tremendous job,” but he was tight-lipped about when fans might see him in the Major Leagues, despite being a third-round pick in 2023.

“I think we’re going to let him play in Triple A,” Stearns stated prior to the Mets’ final game of the series against the Pirates at Citi Field. “His initial start was impressive, and I was looking forward to seeing him build on that.”

Meanwhile, Sprout allowed six runs in just 4¹/₃ innings on Wednesday, raising his ERA to 5.85. His command has been shaky, with three more walks, and he struggles with his changeup—a pitch that has been problematic this season, including one that was hit for a grand slam in the latest game.

Nonetheless, the Mets’ minor league system is off to a good start this season, which includes roster moves like Tidwell’s call to Syracuse. Matt Alan, a 2019 draft pick who hasn’t yet taken the mound this year due to prior injury issues, is also in the mix further down the system.

The 24-year-old right-hander has played seven games at Low-A St. Lucie before moving up to High-A Brooklyn.

“I’m incredibly happy for Matt. I’m incredibly grateful to the rehab team and medical staff for their dedication to him,” Stearns commented. “It’s a great story considering everything he’s gone through, and it’s been tough for him.”
