The Mets will honor the two former players with patches on their uniforms for the remainder of this season.
The team announced Saturday that it would add patches featuring the uniform numbers of Willie Mays (24) and Jerry Groat (15), who recently passed away, to honor the two.
Mays, who played the final two seasons of his Hall of Fame career with the Mets from 1972-1973, died June 18.
The Mets retired his jersey number in 2022.
Groat, a two-time All-Star catcher with the Mets from 1966-1977 and a member of the team’s Hall of Fame, died in April.
He won the 1969 World Series with the team.
The Mets already had the No. 3 patch on their uniforms this season in memory of former player and manager Bud Harrelson, who died in January.
“This has been a tough year for the Mets family,” owner Steve Cohen said in a statement. “We have lost two Mets Hall of Famers, Buddy Harrelson and Jerry Groat, as well as the great Willie Mays.
“Jerry was the best defensive catcher in the history of our organization and led a great 1969 pitching staff. [former owner] Joan Payson promised several years ago to retire Willie’s jersey number on Old Timers’ Day and to find him a permanent home in New York.”
