Mets Make a Bold Move for Pitching Talent
The Mets were in desperate need of an ace, and they certainly paid a price for it.
In a recent trade, the Amazons acquired right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta and 27-year-old reliever Tobias Meyers from the Brewers. However, this came at the cost of top prospects Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, who are now headed to Milwaukee.
Sproat and Williams were part of six prospects that the Mets picked up recently, according to the Baseball America Top 100 Prospects List released on Wednesday.
Sproat, just 25, was ranked as the No. 81 prospect by Baseball America. He was among the Mets’ young pitching talent, sharing the spotlight with Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong, both of whom were brought in late last season to push for a playoff berth.
Last season, Sproat had a 4.24 ERA in 26 Triple-A games, and in the MLB, he started four games, throwing 20 and 2/3 innings with a 4.79 ERA and racking up 17 strikeouts.
Interestingly, the Mets decided not to part ways with McLean, a promising third-round pick from 2023, who’s slated to be a mainstay in the rotation this year.
McLean had an impressive debut last season, winning five of eight starts with a mesmerizing 2.06 ERA and showcasing his skills with 57 strikeouts over 48 innings.
On another note, the Mets also let go of 2022 first-round pick Williams, who, at just 22, played as a middle infielder and center fielder.
In 2025, Williams appeared in 130 games across Double-A and Triple-A, hitting .261 with an OPS of .828, alongside 17 home runs, 52 RBIs, and 34 stolen bases. He was definitely one to watch as he aimed for a spot on the big club.
However, his position became even more precarious when the Mets acquired elite defender Luis Robert Jr. from the White Sox, which likely made Williams more expendable.
Currently, Carson Benge, ranked No. 19, and outfielder/second baseman AJ Ewing, ranked No. 83, remain the only Mets players still vying for a top-100 prospects slot.
