Mets’ Tylor Megill hopes he can live ‘dream’ and pitch against brother

For the past two days, Tyler Megill fulfilled his dream of watching his brother play against the Mets from the Major League dugout.

On Sunday, it will be his brother Trevor Megill’s turn to watch the Mets’ game against the Brewers, who is expected to start.

Or maybe both of Megill’s pitchers will pitch.

“It’s something we all dream about as kids, and last year it seemed like it was going to come true,” Tyler said Saturday, a day after Trevor Megill pitched one scoreless innings of relief against the Mets. Megill said. “[But] It seems much better to do it on opening day. ”

Trevor Megill returned from the bullpen on Saturday and pitched seven scoreless innings with two hits and three strikeouts in the Mets’ 7-6 loss to the Brewers at Citi Field.

A matchup with Megills last year never happened, as both players were optioned to the minor leagues on June 24, just days before the Mets’ series opener against the Brewers.

Tyler Megill said the brothers (Trevor, 30, Tyler, 28) grew up in Southern California, so they never really had a chance to play against each other’s teams.

Tyler Megill joked that he and his brother “have something planned” if a fight breaks out between the Mets and Brewers.

On Friday, the benches were empty after Rhys Hoskins slipped into second base late and spiked Jeff McNeil (though he didn’t throw any punches).

The next day, tensions escalated as the pitcher was ejected after Johan Ramírez pitched behind Hoskins in the seventh inning, but both teams remained in their respective dugouts.

Tyler Megill described himself as more relaxed than his brother.

“He’s a little more emotional than I am,” Tyler Megill said. “And he likes to throw a lot of fastballs, and I throw a lot of fastballs. But he throws two pitches and I throw five pitches, it’s totally different. Everyone asks me, ‘Why are you as good as him?’ I ask if you don’t pitch as hard as you can. Yes, one inning.”

Starling Marte will start at DH and could get some opportunities in the spot until JD Martinez joins the lineup as early as next Sunday.

Coach Carlos Mendoza wants to keep Marte as fresh as possible, citing the fact that the Mets have 19 games scheduled in 20 days.

The Mets sent video of DJ Stewart being picked off from first base for MLB review on Friday.

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Reece Hoskins (12) hits New York Mets right fielder DJ Stewart (29) as the New York Mets play against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Citi Field. In the bottom of the second inning, the first baseman decided to bag out. Robert Szabo of the New York Post

During the play, Hoskins blocked the bag with his foot, a violation of the new rules (although replays cannot be reviewed).

During Saturday’s game, Mendoza spoke with referee Lance Barrett about the incident.

The coach said Barrett looked at the play again and said there was clear interference.

“[Barrett] He was pretty honest and said he missed it,” Mendoza said. “It’s a difficult decision. They’re not used to it.”
