Grimas' saga about the Mets' 2024 season will now be immortalized at Citi Field.
The Mets introduced the Grimace seats during their 2-1 extra-innings win over the Nationals on Monday, paying tribute to the fast-food chain McDonald's purple character, who has become something of a good luck charm this year.
Grimas has become something of an unofficial second mascot for the Mets since throwing the ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field on June 12 before the team beat the Marlins to start their seven-game winning streak.
“It's been amazing to see our fans create the Grimace phenomenon just a few months after his first appearance in June,” Mets senior vice president of partnerships Brenden Mallett said in a press release. “As we look for ways to further capture the magic of this moment and celebrate our new celebrity fans, we felt that installing commemorative seating in advance of Fan Appreciation Weekend was the perfect way to give something back to our fans in a fun and unique way.”
The Grimace seat is located in the second deck in right field, section 302, row 6, seat 12, a reference to June 12, the date when the purple character made his first appearance at the Queens stadium.
The Mets will make the seats available for purchase for their six remaining home games this season.
“It's been a really fun year. And at the same time, we've been playing great. We've been doing great since the end of May,” the Mets' executive vice president and chief marketing officer said. Andy Goldberg told The Associated Press. “I think it adds to the mystique.”
Grimas was at a ceremony to unveil new seats in his honor as the Mets ended a two-game losing streak with a walk-off win in the bottom of the 10th inning on Monday night.
The Mets currently lead the final National League wild card spot by one game.
