A group of Tamaulipas state police officers pursuing the suspects mistakenly crossed into Texas, leading to a brief standoff with U.S. authorities at the international port of entry in Brownsville.
The incident began earlier this week in Matamoros, where Tamaulipas state police responded to a report of a fight in the city’s northeast Benito Juarez neighborhood, a Tamaulipas law enforcement source told Breitbart Texas. As authorities attempted to arrest the suspect, he got into an older Suburban and attempted to drive off north toward Brownsville.
The suspect drove through a tool shed and headed north toward the Texas side of the border, where Tamaulipas State Police Vehicle 1573 pursued the suspect and accidentally crossed into Texas, leading to a brief standoff with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers who briefly detained the getaway driver and the officers.
After a brief interrogation, U.S. authorities allowed the Mexican officers to return to the Mexican side of the bridge, according to a Tamaulipas state police source. Photos provided to Breitbart Texas by Mexican authorities showed the officers walking back into Mexico through another port of entry.
Breitbart Texas reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations, who responded, “Homeland Security Investigations is aware of the situation and is closely monitoring it.”
The incident comes amid a surge in drug cartel violence in the border city of Matamoros, where Gulf Cartel gunmen have carried out multiple ambushes on Tamaulipas state police, Breitbart Texas reported.
