Mexican Government Votes to Allow U.S. Marines to Enter Country for Training Exercises

The Mexican Senate voted to approve a series of joint military exercises. Over the next few days, 155 US Marines will head south to train Mexican Navy infantry.

This week, the Mexican Senate voted unanimously for the joint exercise. This calls for 53 Mexican troops to travel to California for training sessions. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has come from Morena, the country's ruling party, and has pushed the move forward.

Information from the Mexican Naval Secretariat (SEMAR) revealed that the joint exercise will be called Amphibian Phoenix 2025. In preparation for the exercise, Semar released a series of short videos of naval personnel boarding the ship and preparing to sail towards Baja California.

Training is expected to start next week and continue until April. It aims to improve the Mexican military's capabilities in amphibian operations.

In the past, Sinbaum and her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador had previously opposed the involvement of the US government in Mexican military and law enforcement measures. But since the Trump administration's arrival and its harsh stance on drug cartels, the Mexican government has been working slowly to appease Trump and his tariff threats. As reported by Breitbart Texas, Trump threatened Mexico with a series of punitive tariffs on what the White House calls an unbearable relationship between the drug cartel and the Mexican government.
