Mexican Governor Asks Waring Sinaloa Cartel Factions for Peace

The governor of Mexico’s Sinaloa state has called for peace among the various factions of the drug cartels that control the state, following a series of murders linked to intra-crime conflicts that came to light after the Sinaloa cartel leader, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, was kidnapped by the Chapitos faction of the cartel and handed over to US authorities.

At a press conference this week, Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya said the state was increasing military and police personnel and urged people to remain calm.

“I want peace, just like the president,” Rocha Moya said. “I ask anyone who creates violence (the Sinaloa Cartel itself) not to affect the peace of our citizens, our people, our boys and girls.”

Rocha Moya said there had been 10 murders in recent days linked to internal conflicts among “energy generators” — a term he used to avoid naming the Sinaloa Cartel by name. Breitbart Texas reported this week that one of the murders was that of Martin Garcia Corrales, a former El Mayo boss who had a $4 million bounty on his head from the U.S. Department of Justice.

This murder, and nine others that occurred over the course of several days, are believed to be connected to the mysterious events that led to El Mayo’s arrest. It is unclear what happened, but the current theory is that El Mayo met with local politicians. After arriving at the meeting, Joaquin Guzmán López, the son of El Mayo’s former partner, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, allegedly had his armed men subjugate El Mayo and his guards.

The gunmen then put El Mayo on a plane and flew him to a private airport in New Mexico, west of El Paso, Texas, where Joaquin turned himself in and handed El Mayo over to US authorities. It is widely speculated that Los Chapitos had sought a deal with US prosecutors.

The perceived betrayal by Los Chapitos has sparked speculation that a war may be brewing within the Sinaloa cartel, one of the world’s most powerful drug cartels. The US State Department has blamed Los Chapitos and the Sinaloa cartel for the current fentanyl crisis, Breitbart Texas reported.
