Chaos Erupts in Mexican Congress
On Monday, Mexican lawmakers were caught on camera engaging in a physical altercation in the Congress chambers located in Mexico City.
The footage reveals female lawmakers from different political parties struggling to maintain their ground at the podium, which led to shouting matches escalating into shoving and hair-pulling as other deputies attempted to break up the conflict.
This incident occurred while a debate was underway regarding reforms to the transparency watchdog in Mexico City. Members of the right-leaning National Action Party (PAN) were voicing their objections to actions taken by the ruling left-leaning Moreno party.
The PAN lawmakers held firm at the podium while members of the Moreno party tried to oust them, which sparked the altercation. Afterward, both factions denounced the violence, but each accused the other of being the provocateur.
“We approached the podium peacefully, without any aggression. The Majority Legislative Group’s actions were a misguided attempt to seize control through violent means,” said PAN aide Andres Atayde during a press conference following the brawl, according to a translation from Economic Times.
PAN councilor Daniela Alvarez remarked, “This is not just vulgar or insulting; it’s shocking that this is the ruling party in our city.”
Morena’s spokesperson Paulo Garcia echoed similar sentiments, pointing an accusing finger at PAN lawmakers.
“We are truly concerned about how the opposition has turned to violence as a substitute for debate when they find themselves unable to engage in dialogue,” García commented in a program with Mexican news outlets.
