Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a public investigation by the country's attorney general's office into the mayor of Michoacan state Colecoman over the Christmas party. Government officials in attendance reportedly praised the “generosity” of various drug lords from the Jalisco New Generation cartel who showered local children with gifts.
At a morning press conference, Sheinbaum denounced Mayor Anabel Avila Castrejon's alleged praise of drug gangs, calling them “statements that support criminal activity.”
“There is an investigation going on against the mayor,” Scheinbaum said. “An investigation by the Attorney General's Office (FGR) will reveal whether she has any ties to the criminal group.”
The incident began shortly after Christmas, with a video leaked on social media showing a party in Coleman, which was attended by city officials and senior military officials. During the party, cartel members reportedly handed out hundreds of toys to local children.
Later that night, local authorities reportedly hung a banner thanking Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera and his sons for their generosity.
The man, El Mencho, is the supreme leader of the ultra-violent cartel “Cartel Jalisco New Generation.'' This criminal organization was responsible for numerous mass murders, clashes, and even the use of explosives to target rivals. CJNG has also been implicated in multiple attacks in which cartel members killed innocent victims in indiscriminate attacks.
