Mexican navy ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge, leaving 19 injured

A large ship from the Mexican Navy passed through the East River on Saturday night, striking the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge, which resulted in injuries to 19 individuals, as reported by New York Mayor Eric Adams.

During a press conference on Saturday night, Adams confirmed the injuries, mentioning that the affected individuals were transported to Bellevue Hospital. Fortunately, no one fell into the water.

“Our thoughts are with the families, and many are expected to come here from Mexico. We’re working closely with the ambassador and his team to provide accurate information at the hospital,” Adams stated.

Videos shared on social media show that the ship’s three masts were damaged when they collided with the bridge. Despite the impact, the vessel remained upright as it navigated towards the river’s edge before stopping as coast guard personnel arrived.

The Mexican Navy reported on social media that the sail training ship Cuauhtemoc experienced damage during the incident, and both Navy and local authorities are assessing the situation regarding onboard equipment and personnel.

There were 277 people on board the ship, which was en route to Iceland.

The Mexican Navy emphasized its commitment to safety for personnel, transparency in their operations, and high-quality training for future officers of the fleet.

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the matter.
