Mexican TikTok star killed during livestream at a beauty salon

Tragic Murder of Social Media Influencer in Mexico

A Mexican social media influencer was tragically shot during a live stream at a beauty salon known for its connection to cartel violence. Prosecutors have indicated that she was specifically targeted by a hitman.

Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old model and beauty influencer with over 113,000 TikTok followers, was shot in the head and chest by a masked assailant. The attacker fled the scene on a motorcycle alongside an accomplice.

This incident is being classified as a murder and a gender-based crime under Mexican law. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to Marquez’s family and noted that the Mexican security cabinet is actively working to address these violent crimes.

Hours prior to her shocking murder, Marquez had raised concerns about two men arriving at the salon, stating that one of them had a “very expensive” gift for her, which he claimed he needed to deliver but she was not present at the time.

In her final moments, she reportedly said in her video, “Maybe they’ll kill me,” expressing worry about potential threats. Moments before she was fatally shot, she muted her live stream after confirming her identity to the men.

Dennis Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, mentioned that investigators suspect the shooter was hired. He noted that the assailant appeared not to know Marquez personally, suggesting this might have indeed been a paid hit.

Before the shots rang out, Marquez was seen receiving gifts, including a stuffed animal and a bag of Starbucks coffee, during her live broadcast.

The Jalisco region is heavily influenced by one of Mexico’s most powerful cartels, leading to frequent violence involving hired guns, commonly referred to as “Sicarios.” Authorities are currently exploring whether this murder is linked to the recent killing of a former lawmaker in the same vicinity.

The murders have created a ripple of concern across the nation, especially given the high rates of violence against women. President Sheinbaum confirmed that an investigation is in progress to uncover the motive and find those responsible.

Friends and family have mourned Marquez’s loss, holding funerals for her following the tragedy.

The situation highlights a troubling pattern in the region, as Jalisco ranks among the top states for violence since the beginning of the President’s term in October 2024.
