Mexico Complains to Biden over Financing Opposition NGO

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced he would send a letter to U.S. President Joe Biden to complain about his administration’s funding of non-governmental organizations that criticize the administration.

The politician made the announcement at a morning press conference. He noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had just sent a diplomatic notice on the matter, adding that he was personally drafting a letter to Biden on the matter.

The diplomatic note is the second one Mexican diplomats have sent on the same issue. At a press conference, officials said the first diplomatic note was sent in 2021. The message went unanswered.

Lopez Obrador complained that the State Department was funding a group called Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity through a program run by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The NGO has gained notoriety in recent years for compiling reports and statistics on crime and corruption in the country. Lopez Obrador cited the NGO’s reports when he was running for president, according to MCCI. But now that his party is in power, he considers the NGO part of the opposition because of its reporting on high-level corruption, contract fraud and other alleged wrongdoings.

Earlier this week, Mexico’s Financial Crimes Unit (UIF) released information alleging that the U.S. government has transferred more than 97 million pesos (about $5 million) to MCCI since 2018. Authorities also named several private U.S. donors, including funds from the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations.

In making the disclosures, Lopez Obrador and his staff also leaked personal tax and financial information of private citizens who donated to MCCI, the group argued, and in doing so, Lopez Obrador violated Mexican law.

President Lopez Obrador has argued that US support for MCCI is a violation of his country’s sovereignty and could amount to electoral interference.
