Mexico Could ‘Stop’ Accepting Deportations Over Tariff Threats

On CNN's “The Lead” broadcast Tuesday, Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, responded to President-elect Donald Trump's tariff threats by threatening to force negotiations. However, doing so is because , “On the other side of mass deportation are countries that are suddenly taking in thousands of people. They could stop it if they wanted to.'' and “Mexico, Central America, and Canada are also here.'' It has a huge impact, and the new administration would be wise to recognize that.”

Himes said, [relevant remarks begin around 12:55] “Well, the market, the stock market… is up today. So… clearly, market players believe this is the beginning of negotiations. And we believe that this action by Donald Trump… We've seen it before. He obviously uses these threats to get people to the table. [be] They are more willing to negotiate than they would otherwise be. But look, it's a dangerous game. The president-elect also promised mass deportations on his first day. We just heard about it today from his Border Emperor. Remember that behind every mass deportation is a country that is suddenly accepting thousands of people. They could stop it if they wanted. So the issue of tariffs, Mexico, Central America, Canada also has a lot of influence here, and the new administration would be wise to recognize that. ”
