Mexico evaluates the impact of Hurricane Erick as swelling rivers result in at least one fatality.

Officials in southern Mexico are still evaluating the damage caused by Hurricane Eric, as rain continues to affect the area. The storm, now weakened, has raised concerns due to its impact on the landscape, specifically the potential for landslides and flooding.

Tragically, a one-year-old boy was confirmed dead after being swept away by a swollen river following the storm.

Hurricane Eric made landfall early on June 19, 2025, as a formidable Category 3 hurricane along the Pacific coast, between Acapulco and Puerto Escondido.

Authorities have been reminded of the devastation caused by Hurricane Otis in 2023, as Eric’s storms led to landslides, blocked roads, and downed power lines, particularly affecting residents in Acapulco.

As the situation stabilized, locals and remaining tourists cautiously ventured outside, visiting shops that slowly began to reopen after the hurricane passed.

In the nearby Puerto Escondido, fishermen inspected their boats while residents worked to clear away fallen trees and debris from the streets.

Though the immediate danger seemed to lessen, the risk of heavy rainfall lingered, especially in the steep mountains behind Acapulco. Eric continued to bring significant rainfall to those areas.

By Thursday night, it was expected to weaken further in Michoacan province. The U.S. Hurricane Center indicated that Eric was located approximately 95 miles north-northwest of Acapulco, with winds dropping to around 30 mph, transitioning into a low-pressure system.

Initially reaching Category 4 strength, the hurricane weakened just before landfall as a Category 3. Eric had gained intensity rapidly while approaching the coast, showcasing the kind of quick strengthening that is becoming more common.

Authorities reported a first casualty, the toddler in San Marcos, a community southeast of Acapulco. The child’s mother had attempted to traverse a swollen river when he slipped from her grip and drowned.

In Acapulco, while restaurants and shops began to open, schools remained shut as cleanup efforts continued amidst rising waters.

Local resident Juan Carlos Castañeda shared his relief, saying, “Many of us were scared, but now it’s over.” He noted that memories of Hurricane Otis still weighed heavily on the community.

Despite the adverse weather, some residents, like Perla Rosas, found reason to carry on with their daily routines, indicating a mix of resilience and normalcy amidst the aftermath.

The experience of Hurricane Otis looms large in the minds of Acapulco residents, as they brace themselves against the effects of yet another storm. The devastation from Otis in 2023 still resonates, with significant loss of life and widespread destruction lingering in memory and recovery efforts.
