Mexico said Tuesday it would not accept the return of its citizens from the Lone Star State, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling against a Texas immigration law that allows the arrest of people suspected of crossing the southern border illegally. .

Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said SB4 criminalizes immigration, encourages family separation and racial discrimination and profiling. In a statement, Mexico said it would reject any measures that would allow Texas to “enforce immigration controls, arrest and deport nationals and foreigners to Mexican territory.”

“Mexico recognizes the importance of a uniform migration policy and bilateral efforts with the United States to ensure that migrants are safe, orderly, human rights-respecting, and unaffected by state and local legal decisions. “Mexico does not take any stance in this regard. It accepts repatriation by the State of Texas under any circumstances,” the ministry said.

Opponents of SB4, which would allow Texas authorities to arrest illegal immigrants and potentially face deportation and prison time, have strongly criticized the law. In a 6-3 decision Tuesday, the high court said the law can remain in effect while it is pending in a federal appeals court.

While the SCOTUS ruling was praised by Republicans, Democrats largely went in the opposite direction.

Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, said the law would cause “tremendous” harm to the Latino community and create confusion for Texas law enforcement and judges.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the law unconstitutional and said it was “just another example of Republican officials politicizing the border issue and blocking real solutions.”

“We remain focused on delivering important policy changes and the resources needed to secure them. border That’s why we continue to urge Congressional Republicans to pass a bipartisan border security agreement, the toughest and fairest border reform in decades,” she said.

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said the law is part of a Republican strategy to turn the southern border into a political battleground.

“This inhumane border strategy forces Americans to carry their passports in their own neighborhoods and forces mass deportations of immigrant women and children, while enforcing local laws. “This will place an excessive burden on enforcement agencies.”

The law would subject thousands of undocumented immigrants in Texas to the state’s criminal justice system, while deporting those whose “only crime is seeking a better life and the American Dream for their families.” the Texas Democratic Party said in a statement.
