Tragic Shooting of Deputy in Miami-Dade

On Friday, there was a devastating incident in Miami-Dade when a deputy was shot and killed during a confrontation, which prompted a significant police response.

According to Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz, Deputy Devin Jaramillo, aged 27, was responding to a traffic accident when he was shot. He was taken to a local hospital but, unfortunately, did not survive his injuries.

“Today is not okay. What occurred today involving Miami-Dade County and our deputy was unacceptable, and this day will never be okay,” said Cordero Stutz during a press briefing. “I urge the community to pray for the family of our fallen deputy. We all need your prayers because we are hurting.”

The shooting took place just before 4 p.m. as the deputy was headed to a motor vehicle crash in a warehouse district located near Southwest 128th Avenue and 122nd Avenue. Bystanders had called 911, and the response team provided first aid before he was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he later passed away.

“He’s a son, a brother, and a friend,” noted Cordero Stutz, clearly emotional. “He made the ultimate sacrifice to protect us and, well, his life was dedicated to safeguarding yours.” She emphasized the importance of societal acknowledgment of these events, saying, “We must stand together in not accepting this. We are thankful for the bravery of those who protect our communities every single day.”

Cordero Stutz also shared her condolences on social media, stating, “My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging time. Deputy Jaramillo’s memory of integrity, compassion, and courage will endure in the hearts of those who knew him.”

Multiple agencies, including Coral Gables Police, Florida Highway Patrol, and the FBI, responded to the incident. Additional police officers also gathered at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.

The community has expressed their condolences in various ways, with Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava stating, “Our entire community stands with this brave officer, his family, and all the first responders who risk their lives to protect us.” It’s moments like this that remind us of the risks taken by law enforcement in the line of duty.
