Maryland Football Player Arrested After Fatal Crash
Miami Hurricanes linebacker Adarius Hayes is facing serious charges following a devastating vehicle crash in Florida that resulted in the deaths of three individuals.
Hayes has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and reckless driving, as police identified him as the driver involved in a fatal two-car collision last May.
In light of these charges, the Miami football program announced that Hayes has been “indefinitely suspended from all team-related activities,” in accordance with the athletic department’s protocols. No additional details have been provided by the team.
Authorities reported that Hayes turned himself in to police on Friday morning in Largo, Florida. Records indicate he was booked at the Pinellas County Jail, though it’s not clear if he has acquired legal representation yet.
Initial investigations revealed that a 78-year-old woman, along with her two young children aged 10 and 4, tragically lost their lives in the crash. The victims were passengers in a Kia Soul, which collided with a Dodge Durango driven by Hayes.
Witnesses noted that the children were ejected from the vehicle during the collision. Further details from police indicate that Hayes was driving at 78.9 mph in a 40 mph zone just prior to the incident, while also reportedly “actively manipulating traffic.”
Additionally, one more occupant from the Kia was seriously injured during the crash.
According to police reports, Hayes displayed reckless behavior by speeding and making aggressive lane changes, which they characterized as a blatant disregard for the safety of other drivers. These actions ultimately led to the tragic incident resulting in the deaths of three people.
Despite the gravitas of the situation, Hayes had made a notable impression during his freshman year at Miami, participating in 12 games. He was a highly regarded recruit from Largo High School who had drawn attention from several top-tier schools before selecting Miami.
