Miami linebacker Mohamed Toure receives uncommon eighth season of NCAA eligibility

Mohamed Toure’s Return for 2026 Season

It seems Mohamed Toure has a real passion for books—or maybe it’s just a long college football career.

The Miami linebacker is gearing up to come back for the 2026 college football season, which could give him a total of eight years of eligibility, as reported on Saturday.

This choice follows the Hurricanes’ 27-21 defeat to Indiana in the College Football Playoff National Championship. Toure’s decision allows Miami to hold on to one of its strongest defensive assets for another season.

While it might sound a bit unusual to play college football for so long, Toure’s return next season is completely within NCAA guidelines.

Originally from Pleasantville, New Jersey, Toure kicked off his college journey at Rutgers, where he was a three-star recruit in 2019. He redshirted during his freshman year with the Scarlet Knights.

The next season, the NCAA awarded players an extra year of eligibility due to a shortened season linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On top of that, injuries set Toure back considerably, as he missed two full seasons with a torn ACL in both 2022 and 2024, resulting in two medical redshirt years.

All of these circumstances enabled Toure to recoup four years of eligibility, making 2026 his eighth—and final—season.

Having transferred to Miami before the 2025 season, he quickly made a mark on the Hurricanes’ defense, leading the team with 84 tackles (three for a loss) and recording two sacks in 16 games.

Toure recently shared his experience of bouncing back from injuries, expressing gratitude for how things turned out.

“It’s really a blessing. I’m not taking any of this for granted,” he said. “I’ve seen the lowest moments. I know the fight it takes to rise above challenges and reach where I am today. Every opportunity, every game, every practice—I focus on making the most of it and cherishing every moment.”
