Miami (Ohio) coach Chuck Martin said the University of Alabama illegally recruited Miami kicker Graham Nicholson.
In an interview published on the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks’ official website WebsiteCoach Martin directly claimed that the Alabama Crimson Tide team “stole” their kicker.
“You people in the media, it’s all fake.”
“Now, from special teams, we’re missing the kicker,” the reporter began.
“We haven’t lost him. He’s in Alabama,” Martin chimed in. “We know exactly where he is.”
Martin then accused the media of “whitewashing” when it comes to the realities of the NCAA transfer portal.
“To all the media, this is all a myth. No, Alabama stole our kicker. They illegally recruited a kicker and stole him from us. That’s true, but that’s college football,” he said. continuation.
“We’re living in a dream world. Let’s not get into reality. I don’t know why, but all the coaches know what’s going on. Yes, Alabama stole our kicker. A couple other schools tried to steal him, too,” Martin added.
Alabama head coach Karen DeBoer spoke to the media after practice and was asked by reporters about Martin’s claims.
“The coach at Miami has accused you of interfering with the recruiting of Graham Nicholson. Do you have any comments on that?” the reporter asked.
“I don’t know anything about that, but that comment,” DeBoer said. Reply“Yeah, I mean, he (Nicholson) went into the portal and we reached out to him, so that’s how it is, right? We did everything we were supposed to do,” he insisted.
It has not been specifically revealed whether any illegal recruiting activities occurred, but since this was Nicholson’s second time entering the transfer portal, there is speculation that his intention to sign with Alabama was predetermined.
Connor Knapp of Barstool Sports Suggested Nicholson entered the transfer portal in December 2023 and then again in April 2024, so it’s likely his commitment to Alabama was already confirmed by the kicker prior to the transfer period.
