Miami (Ohio) coach Travis Steele knocks over speaker in wild outburst before preserving perfect season

Coach Steele’s Halftime Outburst Leads to Win

Coach Travis Steele of Miami (Ohio) men’s basketball had quite the emotional moment during halftime on Friday. His team, still unbeaten, found themselves trailing against Western Michigan, which led him to react strongly—he ended up punching a referee and receiving a technical foul, and even knocked over a speaker as he stormed off to the locker room.

CBS Sports captured a moment where a DJ appeared to be engaged in a spirited exchange with two other individuals nearby.

Interestingly, Steele’s outburst seemed to spark a turnaround for his team, helping them to overcome a four-point deficit and ultimately clinch a 69-67 victory on a last-second layup by Trae Perry. This win marked their 29th straight game without a loss.

Reflecting on his meltdown, Steele admitted, “We’ve got to be better at halftime. I can’t lose it like that. I got a technical foul out there. I need to handle it better.” His team remains the only undefeated Division I squad in the nation and just needs two more wins to finish the regular season without a loss.

In a bold vow, Steele joked that he would wear a Speedo during the selection ceremony set for March 15 if his team finishes with a perfect 34-0 record, including a victory in the MAC Championship.

Friday’s game was close, with Western Michigan leading 30-26 at halftime, almost spoiling Miami’s undefeated record. Steele was seen venting his frustration on the court, clearly unhappy with the officiating, and reportedly told the referees, “That’s terrible.”

After the technical, Steele confronted an official more directly, appearing quite agitated, before being calmed by a staff member.

As he made his way to the locker room, he knocked over a speaker, which brought about a warning from a CBS announcer commenting on the visible tension of the moment.

Yet, despite a shaky start, Miami managed to rally back. They finished strong, capping the game with a surge that outscored the Broncos 19-8 in the final minutes, with Perry ultimately scoring the decisive basket.

Looking ahead, Miami will host Toledo and then travel to face Ohio next week to wrap up the regular season.

Steele expressed respect for Western Michigan and its coach, Dwayne Stevens, acknowledging the tough competition, “It was a great game. We knew this would be a battle.” He praised his players for their ability to remain composed under pressure, attributing their success in close games to that quality.
