Miami (Ohio) RedHawks Advance in NCAA Tournament

The Miami (Ohio) RedHawks men’s basketball team made a strong statement by defeating SMU 89-79 in a First Four game, securing their spot in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 11 seed. It was an exciting night for the RedHawks, who powered through with impressive performances on the court.

Interestingly, the crowd contributed to the game’s atmosphere. Some students from the Miami fan section came dressed in swim trunks and caps, creating a memorable spectacle. Their antics even managed to distract SMU players at the foul line during critical moments. It was a passionate display of support, for sure.

Playing just about 40 miles from home in Dayton, Ohio, the RedHawks felt a bit of a home-court advantage, despite not being in their usual gym. Eian Elmer led the team with 23 points, nailing six successful 3-pointers. Brant Byers and Luke Skalyak weren’t far behind, contributing 19 and 17 points, respectively. It had been 27 years since Miami won a tournament game, making this victory particularly sweet.

Coach Travis Steele emphasized the importance of being the more offensive team. “I thought that was very evident from the jump ball towards the end of the game,” he remarked, reflecting on their aggressive play style.

Even with a remarkable regular season record of 31-0, the RedHawks faced early elimination from the Mid-American Conference postseason tournament. So, when they found themselves in the mix for the First Four games, there was a bit of buzz—speculation and debates about whether they truly belonged in the tournament.

Yet, the team managed to push aside all the external chatter and focus on what mattered: winning. Elmer shared a candid insight, stating, “To be honest, we’re not really focused on proving whether we belong or not. I think everyone in the locker room thinks we do.” It seems their mindset is more about playing hard and enjoying the journey rather than seeking validation.

On the opposing side, SMU’s Jaden Toombs led his team with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Jaron Pierre Jr. added 18 points. Unfortunately for SMU, they’re still searching for their first tournament win since 1988 after this loss.

Looking ahead, Miami will face Tennessee on Friday, and fans are excited to see how far they can go. It’s shaping up to be an interesting tournament for sure!
