Giants Re-Sign Micah McFadden
While other teams were left pondering about Micah McFadden during free agency, the Giants came in with answers.
McFadden managed to play only 12 snaps last season due to a Lisfranc injury that ended his season prematurely. Following surgery, he stayed in the East Rutherford area for rehab.
This proximity allowed the Giants to monitor his recovery closely. In contrast, other teams in need of a linebacker haven’t been able to gauge his progress since he last appeared on the field.
On Wednesday, a mutual interest resulted in McFadden signing a one-year contract worth $3.5 million, potentially reaching $5.5 million, according to sources.
“I think they were able to answer a lot of questions they had about my recovery,” McFadden noted, mentioning that his return to form helped narrow their options. “That was a big factor in everything.”
“We’re on track,” he added, confident he wouldn’t face any restrictions when spring training kicks off on April 6.
“Even after last season, we continued to improve,” McFadden expressed. “I’m back home, ready to start my regular offseason program. I’ve been working out, running, doing everything necessary to gear up for this year.”
With McFadden’s return, he’ll find a different linebacker corps as the Giants have made some changes since 2022, including letting go of Bobby Okereke and signing free agent Tremaine Edmunds for three years at $36 million.
As for McFadden, he is likely viewed as a starter for now, though he could face competition from Darius Muasau or even potential first-round pick Sonny Styles.
“It’s obviously going to be competitive,” he admitted. “They’re going to keep bringing in players; that’s just the nature of the NFL. My focus is to go out, compete, and try to earn that starting job… and see what happens from there.”
Despite the Giants losing four other members from McFadden’s 2022 draft class during free agency, the new coaching staff has recognized his potential based on film from before his injury.
He received an encouraging call last weekend about the interest in re-signing.
“It means a lot,” McFadden remarked. “I think bringing in Coach and John was a fantastic move. I spoke with them earlier today, and I’m excited to be part of this program. I’m looking forward to working with Coach and contributing to our offseason program.”
McFadden has always admired Edmunds’ style of play since the latter entered the league.
