Potential Split between Cowboys and Mika Parsons
It looks like another complicated separation might be brewing in Dallas.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there seems to be little progress in the long-standing partnership between the Cowboys and Mika Parsons. He mentioned that this once-frustrating connection is heading towards a “divorce” as tensions have escalated during the offseason.
“If you haven’t communicated, closing the deal becomes increasingly unlikely. And they haven’t talked since late March or early April. It feels rather personal at this juncture,” Schefter noted in a podcast.
Parsons, drafted by the Cowboys as the 12th overall pick in 2021, is pushing for a new contract as he enters the final year of his rookie deal.
Last month, team owner Jerry Jones took an unusual stance on the matter as the Cowboys commenced training camp, seemingly taking aim at the star defensive end, who racked up 12 sacks last season.
In response, Parsons, 26, expressed a desire for a trade on social media, sharing how his March chat with 82-year-old Jones was supposed to be about contract discussions. “But I didn’t think it was a formal negotiation,” he remarked.
Schefter speculated that there’s been an ongoing rift between the key player and the organization throughout the NFL offseason, beyond just typical discussions.
“The Cowboys made public comments regarding something Mika expressed at the start of training camp that didn’t sit well with him. He’s indicated he’s ready to move on from Dallas,” Schefter explained.
“Could mediation happen? I haven’t seen signs of it. It certainly seems they’re on the road to separation. The big question is, when will that happen?”
Jones advised Cowboys fans not to worry too much about the situation, but he appears to acknowledge the possibility that Parsons may not be present for the season opener against the defending champion Eagles.
Schefter reiterated that it doesn’t seem like either party is invested in a long-lasting partnership.
“Right now, it feels like they’re not inclined to solidify a long-term relationship. We’ll have to see if anything changes before the season kicks off in a few weeks.”
The Cowboys have dealt with fractured relationships in the past, famously parting ways with head coach Jimmy Johnson in 1994.
The season opener will see the Cowboys facing off against the Eagles on September 4th.
