Michael Che’s Controversial Jokes About Charlie Kirk
In his latest Netflix special, comedian Michael Che made headlines by mocking the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. Making an offbeat joke, he compared the event to a scene from Squid Games.
Che opened Shot In Minnesota by expressing that he might get emotional, humorously resembling the demeanor of Erika Kirk, though he clarified that he meant no disrespect to the Kirks, mentioning uncertainty about their presence in the audience.
He then spent over two minutes riffing on Kirk’s murder, which drew laughter from the crowd. Che candidly admitted, “I don’t even know who Charlie Kirk really is. I found out about that dude the day he got shot.” This admission led to cheers and chuckles among the audience in Minneapolis.
He continued, sharing that he learned about Kirk because people started messaging him, asking if he would make jokes about it. “I thought they were talking about the dude from Star Trek; I was like, ‘What?! They shot Captain Kirk?!’” Che quipped, illustrating his confusion.
As he scrolled through his social media, Che noticed older white men visibly upset and wearing trucker hats, remarking, “These don’t look like Trekkies,” while poking fun at Kirk’s supporters. He humorously exaggerated by saying that some expressed unreasonable anger, insisting that Black people would pay for the incident, which he deemed an odd accusation.
“Black people shot Captain Kirk? For what? I didn’t even know we were mad at him,” Che remarked, further highlighting his disbelief.
He kept the humor rolling, questioning how Kirk could have been shot in Utah, noting, “Ain’t no Black people in Utah.” He joked about NBA legend Karl Malone being a potential suspect, saying it didn’t make sense for Malone to shoot someone from Star Trek.
Che expressed confusion upon seeing a video of the shooting, saying, “I wish I did not see that,” and referenced the incident where Kirk was asked a question about gun violence at the time of his assassination. The audience responded with hearty laughter when he exclaimed, “They shot that dude like Squid Games.”
Throughout the special, Che didn’t shy away from strong language, frequently referring to Trump and conservatives in derogatory terms, which added to the special’s controversial nature.
