Michael Douglas Reflects on Nearly Losing Iconic Role in “Wall Street”

In a recent panel at the TCM Classic Film Festival, Michael Douglas, now 81, shared some interesting stories about his career and the making of the 1987 film “Wall Street.” It turns out, he wasn’t always the first choice for his Oscar-winning role.

Douglas recounted, “I hadn’t seen this film in about 40 years, and seeing it again was quite moving.” He revealed a surprising detail: director Oliver Stone initially approached Warren Beatty, who passed it up, then Richard Gere, who also declined before it came to him. “As an actor, you always hope you’re the chosen one,” he noted with a hint of self-reflection.

He also touched on how it felt to think about those earlier rejections. “Those poor kids… they turned me down,” he joked, suggesting a light heart amidst the nostalgia.

Douglas won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko, a ruthless Wall Street investor who partners with Bud Fox, played by Charlie Sheen. He later reprised this iconic character in 2010’s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” In that sequel, Gekko, having just been released from prison, seeks to reclaim his lost empire.

Recalling the sequel, he mentioned, “I was really excited about the serious tone and thought it was a stellar part. Roles like this are hard to come by.” It’s clear he values choosing quality films and is eager to make the most of his career opportunities.

Recently, Douglas announced plans for a memoir that will delve into his 50-year journey in Hollywood, his marriage to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, and even his battle with stage 4 cancer. He humorously commented on the writing process, saying it stirred up many memories, stating, “There are so many things I want to convey before I forget.”

Douglas and Zeta-Jones have been together for 25 years, with their anniversary coming up in November 2025. Zeta-Jones shared a heartfelt post about their wedding day, describing the romantic details and reaffirming her love for him: “I love you today as much as I did then.”

The couple first crossed paths in 1998 at the Deauville Film Festival in France, getting engaged the following year and tying the knot in November 2000. They are proud parents to two children: Dylan, 25, and Carys, 22.

As Douglas looks back on his remarkable career and personal journey, one can sense a rich tapestry of experiences that resonate not just in film but in life as well.
