Michael Imperioli Reflects on ‘The Sopranos’ Characters’ Political Leanings
Michael Imperioli, known for his role in ‘The Sopranos’, recently shared his thoughts on the political inclinations of the show’s characters. In an interview, he suggested that many of these iconic figures might very well support Trump.
“The series revolves around the American Dream, especially from the immigrant perspective,” he noted. “If it were produced today, I imagine that theme would remain significant, particularly in light of current issues regarding immigrants in the U.S.”
He further elaborated, acknowledging the irony that, although all the characters are portrayed as immigrants, many of them might still align with Trump’s views. It’s interesting—and perhaps a bit contradictory—considering that, historically, many Italian immigrants were once considered illegal.
Show’s Legacy and the Prequel
‘The Sopranos’ aired from 1999 until 2007, claiming 21 Emmy Awards, including several for outstanding performances. Years after its conclusion, a prequel film titled ‘The Saints of Newark’ was released in 2021, featuring Michael Gandolfini as a younger version of Tony Soprano, the character originally played by his father, James Gandolfini.
Michael Gandolfini reflected on his auditioning experience, saying that the process was challenging. “When I began watching the show during auditions, I realized just how talented my dad was. It made me proud but also a bit frustrated,” he admitted.
James Gandolfini sadly passed away in 2013, leaving behind a legacy through his groundbreaking role.
Behind-the-Scenes Memories
Co-star Drea de Matteo recalled moments that showcased James Gandolfini’s generosity, like gifting each actor a hefty check after a DVD deal excluded them from profit-sharing. She mentioned, “He also treated us to fancy watches and catered food every Friday. He was truly a down-to-earth guy.”
While Gandolfini won numerous accolades, Drea emphasized that she hopes he is remembered primarily for bringing Tony Soprano to life, reflecting on the impact of his unforgettable performance.
“Ultimately, that character and his legacy lives on,” she said. “His influence remains with his family and everyone he touched in the industry.”
