Michael Jordan expresses deep sadness over the passing of Stacey King at 59

NBA Legend Michael Jordan Mourning the Loss of Teammate Stacy King

Michael Jordan is heartbroken over the passing of his former teammate, Stacy King, who died at the age of 59 following a serious fall at home on Saturday.

“I’m really saddened to hear about Stacey’s passing,” Jordan expressed in a statement. “We had several special years as teammates, and he was part of a team that helped shape an era of Chicago Bulls basketball.” He added, “My thoughts are with Stacey’s family, friends, and all those he impacted throughout his life.”

Jordan and King played together for four seasons after King was drafted sixth overall by the Bulls in 1989.

At the time, Jordan had achieved significant fame in the NBA but hadn’t yet secured his first championship.

King primarily served as a backup for the Bulls, yet he was instrumental in helping Jordan clinch championships during the Finals in 1991, 1992, and 1993.

The highlight of King’s career with the Bulls was arguably his rookie year, during which he averaged 8.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists.

After King’s death, the Bulls organization released a statement expressing gratitude for his contributions: “We appreciate everything Stacy did for the Chicago Bulls and the city that he proudly called home. His legacy will endure through the many lives he touched and the memories he helped forge.”

Following his stint with the Bulls, King played in 31 games during the 1993-94 season before being traded to the Timberwolves. Over the next five years, he moved among the Heat, Celtics, and Mavericks.

Post-retirement, King transitioned to a broadcasting role, becoming a color commentator for NBC Sports Chicago and the Chicago Sports Network, where he even won an Emmy Award. He also hosted his own podcast titled “Gimme The Hotsauces,” named after one of his memorable calls.

Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf remarked, “Stacey King was a cherished part of the Bulls family and one of the truly unique personalities in our organization’s history. His bond with Chicago, the Bulls, and our fans lasted more than 30 years—first as a player, and later as a distinctive voice bringing Bulls basketball into the homes of fans for generations. We will certainly miss him and always remember the joy, energy, humor, and passion he brought to our organization and our broadcasts.”
