Michael Kay couldn't believe the Yankees' collapse against the Marlins

The atmosphere was electric as the Marlins reveled in their walk-off win.

On Friday night, the Yankees had strong leads of 6, 5, and then 2 runs against the Marlins, yet ultimately faced a crushing defeat, losing 13-12.

It’s hard to wrap your head around what happened. Even Michael Kay, a well-known announcer, struggled to process the outcome.

“It’s unbelievable what just unfolded. My goodness. What a tough loss for the Yankees,” he remarked after a surprising walk-off swing bunt from newcomer Kamilo Doval.

“All three save opportunities the Yankees were banking on failed this time. They had a 6-0 lead, and it just fell apart… We keep finding ourselves in deeper holes,” he added.

If the Yankees find themselves missing the postseason, many might remember this game as the pivotal moment—“that’s the game that cost them,” they might say.

All-Star Carlos Rodon had a 6-0 lead but couldn’t go beyond five innings. Reliever Jonathan Roissiga allowed two consecutive runners to score, narrowing the gap to 6-4.

New reliever Jake Bird came in during the seventh with a 9-4 advantage, but he allowed a grand slam that changed the momentum.

David Bednar, a recent addition, couldn’t stop the bleeding either, giving up a home run that turned the five-run cushion into a 10-9 deficit.

In the ninth, the Yankees managed to take a 12-10 lead, but Doval was unable to seal the deal.

Analyst Paul O’Neill summed it up, stating, “It feels like a little league game out there,” as errors accumulated throughout the match.

The new bullpen gave up nine runs over two and a third innings, allowing nine hits and two home runs.

As it stands, the Yankees are at 60-50, just shy of the top wild card spot with the Red Sox slightly ahead of them in the playoff race.

Saturday’s game features Kam Schlitler facing off against Yuri Perez.

“There’s really no reason this game turned out the way it did,” O’Neill commented. “So many mistakes and poor pitches; the Marlins were giving it their all, they weren’t backing down.”

“You’re right, Michael. It’s a really tough loss for the Yankees,” he concluded.
