Michael Kay Comments on Juan Soto’s All-Star Snub
Michael Kay, the play-by-play broadcaster for Yes Network, has weighed in on the fact that Juan Soto, the 26-year-old outfielder, hasn’t been selected for the All-Star Game this year. He mentioned this during his show, particularly highlighting Soto’s disappointment regarding the situation.
“It’s a bit tone-deaf,” Kay remarked. His show often addresses questionable comments in sports.
“Honestly, Juan, I’ve seen your earnings this season, which are under $47 million, and you’re upset about not making the All-Star roster? I mean, you have an All-Star bonus in your contract.”
He continued, “I don’t even know what that bonus might be. Let’s say it’s around $500,000; still, it’s not exactly chump change. But come on, you’re earning $47 million this year! Do you really understand how that looks?”
This marks the first time in five years that Soto has missed out on an All-Star selection in a historic 15-year contract with the Mets.
When approached about his omission on Tuesday, Soto acknowledged that other players might deserve the spots more than he does. “It’s part of the game,” he said. “There are plenty of talented players out there and a roster that only accommodates 25. Not everyone can make it.”
Soto then humorously addressed questions about his desire to build a team, noting that some athletes enjoy their rest during breaks. “What do you think?” he quipped, prompting laughter from reporters. “There’s a lot of money at stake here.”
This season in Queens has been a mixed bag for Soto. He faced challenges early on but has recently turned things around, showcasing a batting average of .322 in June with 11 home runs and 20 RBIs, which resulted in a .900 OPS for the season.
Kai initially believed Soto’s earlier comments about being grumpy in the clubhouse were just distraction. Earlier this season, he stirred some conversation by claiming Soto was “very grumpy” as he contemplated his future, hinting he preferred a return to the Yankees but opted for the Mets due to family reasons.
As news circulated, Mets fans leaned into Kay’s remarks. This weekend, the Mets are set to face the Royals in a three-game series before the All-Star break.
