Michael Kay fired back hard at Yankees fans who believe he speaks for Brian Cashman.
On “The Michael Kay Show” on Wednesday, the longtime Yankees play-by-play announcer blasted the “smoking-mouthed assholes” on social media who believe they've received “their orders to leave” from the Yankees general manager for suggesting that poor-hitting Alex Verdugo has a better chance of making the team's playoff roster than poor-defensive Jason Dominguez.
“I don't look at social media during the game, but I look at what people are saying after the game, so I said it'll be interesting to see what they do in left field at some point during the game,” Kaye said.
“Because Dominguez had a tough outing in left field. And he did! But the idiots, the talkers, were quick to attack me: 'Tough outing? Two home runs, .900 OPS!' That's not what I said. I wasn't saying anything about the offense. His defense was tough. In the postseason, you want one out of 27. If you allow one out, you're in trouble.”
Coach Kaye continued to say Dominguez will be a special player, but reiterated that he will be a liability in left field.
“So I said they might use Verdugo and it will be interesting to see if Dominguez stays on the roster,” Kay said.
“That's just Michael Kay saying this! I'm not saying anybody. I'm just trying to guess how they're going to construct their 26-man roster. Verdugo is awful offensively. Awful! So, they're going to have to make a decision in the postseason. Do they want a defenseman or do they want a guy who can hit and can actually bang, and that's Jasson Dominguez. That's the decision they're going to have to make.”
By putting the bounty on the line, Kaye effectively denied having any contact with Cashman, let alone any orders, over the past few months.
“So in this thread I said [Dominguez] “He had a bad outing … that turns into, 'Well, obviously he's getting his marching orders from Cashman and the gaslighting has begun, so when Dominguez isn't starting, he's already paving the way,'” Kaye said.
“I can get out of the way to make sure that there's no panic amongst the fans at the shows and at the games. So here are the terms: I'm going to make an offer that I've never made before. So to any fans that say I'm taking orders from Cashman, if you can prove that I've had any interaction with Brian Cashman in the last two months, I'll make you a standing offer of $10,000 in cash right now.”
Kaye said the reward applies to communications in person, over the phone, email or text.
“If you smooth-talking bastards can prove that I had any dealings with Brian Cashman so that he could 'give me orders' I will pay you $10,000 if you give me that evidence,” Kaye repeated.
