Michael Lombardi Steps Down from UNC Football Program

Michael Lombardi is no longer part of the North Carolina football team. The longtime NFL executive resigned from his role as the general manager of the college program, the university announced on Thursday.

This decision comes after Lombardi had been placed on paid administrative leave due to an ongoing internal investigation, which will continue despite his resignation, according to UNC.

Lombardi joined the program in 2025, just before Bill Belichick’s inaugural season, and he was viewed as one of Belichick’s most trusted advisors.

In a press release, the university stated, “Effective September 3, 2026, Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position as General Manager of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s football program.”

UNC committed to pursuing its investigation and will address any necessary actions based on what it discovers.

The inquiry into Lombardi’s actions became public in late July, with the university referencing unspecified allegations. They were somewhat tight-lipped about the specifics, emphasizing confidentiality.

Upon his appointment, Lombardi became the highest-paid figure in college football operations, drawing an annual salary of $1.5 million—a notable sum, really. He was one of the first significant hires when Belichick took over at UNC.

Belichick commented on Lombardi’s situation when the latter was put on administrative leave, saying, “We’re working through some things… It’s a particular time of year, and there are different factors in play.” He indicated they were taking things step-by-step.

Despite a challenging previous season, which ended with a 4-8 record, Belichick started his second season on a high note after the Tar Heels managed an upset against TCU in Ireland last weekend.
